Kitteh's Birthday

Last year, we got 2 new kittens (their names are Peas and Oatmeal). We got them from a local shelter that did not know exactly when the kittens were born. They assumed, however, that they were born sometime in April of 2010. Therefore, we took April Fools Day as an opportunity to drink to the birth of our crazy kittens!

In my journey to taste beers I have not yet tasted, I came across my first beer here. It is Bridgeport Brewing Company's India Pale ale. A bottle conditioned pale ale with 5 hop varieties and a 5.5% ABV. BBC is touted as Oregon's oldest brewery and if they keep making beers as good as this one, I say that is a title they will be holding onto for a while! The beer was crisp and clean with a slighty hoppy yet not citrus-y finish. As far as standard IPA's go, I think this one is pretty good.

For my second beer of the evening, I stuck with another IPA and a relatively new arrival on the Saint Louis beer scene, SKA Brewing Company's Modus Hoperandi. Modus, has a much darker body and a much more intense hop flavor. Being a pretty big "hop head" myself, I prefer this IPA to the Bridgeport previously discussed. Modus boasts a 6.8% ABV, a very citrus-y and pine-y flavor and a great malty body; all of which I love immensely! I liken this beer to the Schlafly APA (another one of my favorite brews).

After that Modus, I had that "man that was good... I want another one of those" feelings... so I had one more... and then another... :)

Damn... they are goooooood!

I capped the night with one last Bridgeport IPA and called it a night!

  2. I thought you were going to do one per day or something like that. At this rate by September, you're going to have a lot of trouble finding new and unique beers.

Another thought....the compiled list is a cool idea, but have you thought about some kind of ranking system? 5 stars for the best beers, 4 for pretty good, etc. That might be a pretty good reference for other fellow hopheads.

  3. I thought about ranking beers... but that's really hard to do without having all the beers in front of you. There is a subectiveness to "rankings" that I really don't like. Feel free to put your opinions on beers or to suggest beers for me to try! I can always use your expertise on these matters!

  4. Nice. I'd definitely like to try that Bridgeport IPA. Do you know where it's sold? I don't think I've ever seen it before.

  5. We can get it at our local grocery stores here in St Louis... I don't know where you would be able to find it in Wisconsin. If you are a big fan of IPAs though Derek, you have a good selection of local Wisconsin beers to try, including the Lakefront Brewery's (Milwaukee) IPA and Ale Assylum's (Madison) Hopalicious.
