ASBMB Meeting... day1

Your humble blogger will be spending the next 6 days in beautiful downtown Washington DC for a scientific conference where I will be talking about my recent work in the lab. This conference; ASBMB,  (an acronym for the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) will be focused, as the name suggests on Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, neither of which are my areas of expertise. I am a Behavioral Neuroscientist who studies sleep (and beer making/drinking). This basically means that I will be spending a good amount of time drinking while I am here and avoiding going to talks that I know nothing about!

On top of that, my "brother" Jason, a notoriously prolific drinker, will be coming up to visit me from Philadelphia and influencing your humble blogger to drink all kinds of beers in the coming days. With that said, be prepared for this blog to not only experience an exponential increase in posts, but to become belligerently incomprehensible!

Cheers with a sleep deprived Lex. Goose Island in my hand.
Well, after all that buildup, I should tell you all about last night's beers. Because of my travels and spending the night talking science with a bunch of biochemistry nerds, my roommate at this conference and I were far too tired to go bar hopping around DC and decided to hit the hotel bar instead. The beer selection was a little sad. They had no beers on tap at all and very limited selection of craft beers. They did, however, have the always delicious Goose Island Brewery's IPA. I made special note of drinking this brand of beer in particular before their new corporate owners bastardize the Chicago-land favorite. That's right folks, if you didn't know, In-Bev: owners of Anheiser Busch now also own Goose Island.

Alexis, my roommate and friend, flew all the way from Germany today for this conference and two beers over a burger with 2 old friends is one of the best ways to spend a Friday night (my wife is going to kill me for that link). Honestly, there is something about drinking a beer and talking with friends that really makes life worth living! Even though it was a relatively uneventful night... it was still a good time with Lex and I will miss her when she goes back to Germany.

  1. "a notoriously prolific drinker"....truer words have never been spoken.

Thanks for the Friday link. I feel like an idiot for not realizing what it would link me to before I clicked on it. Did you see that there are almost 100 million views of that garbage?

Glad to see you haven't been converted to a complete St. Louis fanboy (St. Louisian? St. Louisite?) and still see InBev for what it is. There's plenty of more microbrews out there. If you come across Sun King brewery out of Indianapolis, try their Osiris Pale Ale or their Maibock.

  2. Thanks for the "sun king" suggestion! I will definitely check it out! Specifically, I will check the specialty shops around St Louis to see if I can find any of their beers, considering I probably won't be able to get to Indy any time soon :(

If I do find myself in Indy though, I would hope you would take me around to these Beer meccas!!! Hope all is well Jason!
