ASBMB day 3

Air and Space Museum
Tonight was just exhausting!

I visited 3 museums; I saw priceless works of art; I ate pancreas... well... not really, but if you get that reference, then you will probably think its funny! If not, post below and I will explain.

I started the day today with a bloody mary from a wonderful DC brunch place called "Busboys and Poets", a restaurant/bookstore with severe hipster overtones!

Notice the "old bay" and salt on the rim!
I detest tomatoes. I don't want to, but I hate them. Because I know that I should like them, I try to eat them as often as I can so that I can learn to like them. Bloody Marys are a great way to "eat" tomatoes without actually eating tomatoes and they are usually packed with some of my favorite things (olives/celery/pickles). This bloody mary was not your traditional tomato juice and vodka. The juice was fortified with fresh horseradish, hot sauce, old bay seasoning, a mixture of crushed peppers and my favorite... BEER! That's right, they actually mix beer into their bloody's at this place. I must say, even though I typically dislike tomatoes, this bloody mary really hit the spot!

That evening I went to dinner at my friend Tim's house. We ate empanadas and talked about the good old days! I consumed a delicious Bell's Amber with dinner. Bell's is a Michigan based brewery whose '2 hearted ale' is one of my favorite beers! The Amber is a golden and flavorful beer that I say rivals the quality of the "levity" I spoke on in earlier posts. It boasts a 5.8% ABV and because of its smoothness and drinkability can be dangerous if you need to wake up early the next day!

Harpoon in a dark bar
After dinner, we ventured down to Adams Morgan. A neighborhood in downtown DC that has biker bars, dance clubs, sports pubs, pizza shops and hole in the walls. It basically covers the spectrum for anything you would want to do on a night of going out. We grabbed a Harpoon IPA at a dive bar called "The Faucet" and then I grabbed a "Red Stripe" from some posh nightclub (that ironically had no one in it... just us) that did not have a name on the door! Harpoon is a Boston based company and their IPA is light and crisp while the Red Stripe, was consumed out of necessity. This "Posh" night club was more of a place for martinis and cocktails of the like, therefore, their beer selection was pretty poor and all in bottles.

The last couple of days I have been walking around A LOT and after so much time on my feet, it was nice to just go back to the hotel, crack another Kona Longboard and drift off to sleep.

  2. I love that you continue to eat tomatoes hoping you will start liking them. This is exactly what I do with olives. Every time I eat them I think I hate olives, but then when I see them in front of me I think I should like olives. Most people just decide they don't like something and refuse to eat it. I am happy to see that you and I are of a different breed. This must be why we are friends...or maybe it's because I lived with your wife in college...either way.

  3. Hey Derek, if you like Two Hearted, look into Madison's own "ale asylum" for their hopalicious... i will be reviewing it when i get home for the blog... but i can tell you in advance that it is delicious!

Erika... keep on those olives... you will learn to love em!

  4. If you like the Hopalicious, you should give the Ballistic IPA a try. Crazy amount of hops in that one. Makes the Hopalicious taste like water if you have the Ballistic first. And Hopalicious is pretty damn hoppy.
