One night at the Pulitzer

So Thursday night, my good friend Lauren asked me to be a "scientific adviser" for an art show where a Jungian and a Freudian psychologist debated the meaning behind some pieces of art in the gallery at the Pulitzer. Interestingly, none of the discussion involved being in love with your mother as the main reason for making strange art. There was, however, a fair amount of talk about the anal stage of development, and I chuckled a lot.

Afterwards, I was treated to a couple fine brews from a recent addition to the St Louis beer scene, Urban Chestnut Brewing Company. They have a very interesting concept that focuses on both traditional beer styles on one hand and more modern and original styles on the other (they call them the reverence and revolution beer series' respectively).

My first beer was from the "new school" or "revolution side of the menu. It was called "Hopfen", a self described "Bavarian IPA". It was a unique, crisp and hoppy IPA made with all German style hops. This was an IPA that was unlike most "traditional" IPAs in that it lacked the citrus-y and pine-y notes that I love in traditional and American pale ales. It was served in a brandy snifter-like glass which helped highlight the floral aromas in this wonderful and flavorful beer. I would say that it is not my favorite beer ever made, but I think there will be times that I crave this beer!

My second beer of the night was UCBC's flagship beer; the Zwickel. this was a yeasty, more traditional beer that was served in the more traditional German style ceramic stein.  The most notable thing about this beer was the amazing foaming head. It was frothy and clung to the glass and your lips with vigor. Again, this will not be my new favorite beer, but I will definitely get cravings for this beer. In fact, I anticipate spending at least a couple of warm St Louis summer nights drinking these delicious beers in UCBCs yet to be completed beer garden.

I give both of these beers high marks for taste and drinkability, I just hope their availability around the Saint Louis area increases so I can drink them with more frequency.

All in all, this was a great night and I thank my friends Ben and Lauren again for the opportunity to talk science, art, beer and life with them on a great night... and for the beers they bought me... thanks guys!
